A Visit to Le Marche St George

Food Travel

Just like every Instagram crazy millennial, I have a huge obsession with cafes. I’m that stereotypical girl that doesn’t let anyone eat or drink their food until I have taken a picture of it and I actively seek out restaurants and cafes with rustic and vintage atmospheres. I love latte art and I’m not ashamed.

Last week I visited Vancouver, BC for a holiday with my boyfriend. While I was reading an email from my Airbnb host, I noticed he had recommended a couple of restaurants near by and one of them, a French cafe, was half a block away from where we were staying.

My boyfriend and I walked past Le Marché every day; it was situated on the corner of 28th Ave. and St George St. The cafe was in an old, slightly lopsided house with festive garland framing the doorway. Outside the cafe, the reflection in the tabletops showed bright, string lights that hung over the sidewalk. More often then not, we had used their warm glow to guide us home after one too many pints of beer while out on the town. Inside was a wide array of mismatched tables and chairs. Like a true, French cafe, most of the tabletops were made from white marble. This was a detail that made me reminiscent of my own visit to Paris last Spring. Every bench and chair also held a number of mismatched cushions and pillows, which added some comfort to the hard, worn bench I had chosen to sit on. On almost every wall there were black chalkboards featuring specials of the day and on the wall behind the register there hung a larger chalkboard featuring their menu. They served every French delicacy, ranging from croissants to quiches. Our croissants were buttery and flaky and, fittingly, served on mismatched, rustic, tin plates. While I sat there, sipping on my cappuccino and listening to the sound of the baristas chatting away in French, I felt like I had taken a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in Paris, rather than Vancouver.
